2003 Striped Bass Tourney
Building on the growing success of this
event, the 2003 tourney grew in size yet again, with an additional 30 boats
entering over the 112 a year before. The number of anglers also grew to nearly
500 making the total entries for the event 142 boats and 487 anglers competing
for cash prizes for the Top 10 with a $2500 check waiting for the overall
winner.
As usual, the fishing was just part of the three day event, which featured
plenty of great food, lots of chances to swap fish tales with friends new and
old and time to enjoy all the amenities the Sea Shell has to offer.

The weekend began with the kick-off party and Captain's meeting on Friday night with a little business followed by lots of food and fun.
|
|
While the fishing time officially started
at 9 p.m. right after the meeting, many stuck around for the festivities,
choosing to wait until Saturday morning before heading out. The next morning after resting up from the feast that was accompanied by lots of longnecks and tall fish tales the rest of the boats, skippers and crews, some making it a family affair, headed out for the first full day fishing. |
As the competitors docked and returned to the Shell with their catches, the judges carefully documented each entry and made sure it qualified.
|
It's not as easy as it sounds. Try the judge's test here. Which one of the weigh-ins to the right is not a valid entry? |

Below Left: The Top Female Angler was Sue Kaiser of the Tuna Sue with a catch of 21.1 pounds. She collected her prize from Tourney co-sponsor Tom Hughes of the Sea Shell Below Right: This year's Top Junior Angler was also a female for the first time in Tourney history. Lizzie Scheverman fishing on the Short Season reeled in a 17.2 pounded to take the top spot and collect an excellent prize. |
|
Of course, there was plenty of fun to be had for all at the Fish Fry and Awards Banquet on Sunday. It was time for dancing, feasting and more Fish Tales.

| As always, the weekend's festivities culminate with the check presentation to that year's deserving recipients. Pictured to the right are members of the LBI Museum and Historical Society (center) flanked by Tom and Sherry Hughes (left) and John and Sue Hughes, who presented the museum with a check for $9,500. |

No event can be a success without the efforts of the Committee and the Sea Shell staff volunteering to help out. Pictured below are just of the folks out and behind the scenes that helped make this year's Tourney a success.
