Every October, the best bass anglers
on the East Coast sign up their boats and crews to
compete in LBI's final fishing tournament of the season. Our
weekend-long competition benefits local charities such as Beach Haven
Volunteer Fire Company, Neighbors in Need and in 2002 raising funds
for The LBI Community Activities Center in Beach Haven.
Besides great fishing, we offer plenty of social activities
such as banquets, cocktail parties and the Grand Awards Banquet on
Sunday. Look below at some of the highlights of the 2002 Derby.
If you want more information or an entry form for the 2003 Striped Bass Derby,
Oct. 24-26, 2003 call the Sea Shell at (609)

2002 Striped Bass Tourney
As has become a tradition, the 2002 event
was an amazing success. Mixing good food, good friends and good-hearted
competition, all for a good cause 375 anglers on 112 boats took part in what is
becoming the premier fall fishing tournament on Long Beach Island.
The weekend began with the kick-off party
on Friday night.

The next morning after resting up
from the feast accompanied by lots of longnecks and tall fish tales, the teams headed out in search of the winning striper.
| When the fishing was finished on
Sunday, Capt. John Brown of the AOK and his angler Doug Walker walked away with
the top prize of $2500 and bragging right until this year's tourney. Doug
reeled in a 25-pounder to take top honors. Doug (front, left) and Capt. Brown (center) show off their trophy and tourney poster with some help from the Coors Light girls and a fellow AOK shipmate Doug Kinzler (right). The trophies and checks, as always, were presented by Tourney Coordinator Tom Hughes (below right) at Sunday evening's Fish Fry and Awards Banquet. |

Second Place went to the team at the left. Capt. Brian Gurka (2nd from left) of the Last Call and angler Joe Ryan with his 21 pound catch celebrate with the rest of the "crew". Capt. Walt Johnson, on the right, of
the XYZ did his own fishing. He came in 3rd with a 20 pound, 6
ounce striper. |

There were still chances to go home a winner at the banquet with the Chinese auction. Of course, some prizes, while in the theme of the event, weren't quite as good as others. Right, ladies? |
